I can't seem to get my headphones to work when I plug them in my computer?

Recently instaled a sound card - sound blaster x-fi xtreme audio, and I want to use Ventrillo, however, I notice that whenever I plug in my headphones i still hear the sounds coming out of the speakers instead of the headphones not just for ventrillo, but for everything else too.
