If you are a session guitarist can you get away with read just the chords written above the notes?

Depends on the musician. Many of the musicians in Nashville use what is called a "number" system -- instead of writing "G," "C" and "D," they write "1," "4" and "5." Some people can hear it and play it. Others can read music.
